Graphing vs Scientific Calculator
Choose a calculator category before comparing brands or models.
If the class asks you to see the function, choose graphing. If it asks you to calculate only, scientific may be enough.
A graphing calculator adds a coordinate plane, visual intersections, plots and graph-based analysis. A scientific calculator concentrates on numeric expressions, fractions, trigonometry, logarithms and statistics.

2026 exam-policy snapshot
Bluebook includes an embedded calculator for Math. Students may also bring an approved handheld; four-function, scientific and graphing models are allowed subject to restrictions, while CAS functionality is not permitted.
A permitted calculator may be used on the mathematics test only. ACT says every math problem can be solved without one and maintains a prohibited-feature list.
Calculator access depends on the specific AP Exam and section. Eligible 2026 digital exams provide the appropriate built-in Desmos option, and approved handheld calculators remain permitted where policy allows.
