Enter rational values clearly and convert exact answers into the format your class requires.
Enter a fraction
The most reliable universal method is division with parentheses. For three-fourths, enter 3÷4. For a fraction such as (x+1)/(x-2), use parentheses around both numerator and denominator.
Convert the displayed result
After calculating, use the fraction/decimal conversion command available through the MATH menu. On supported operating systems, ►Frac converts a suitable decimal to a fraction and ►Dec converts an exact fraction to decimal form.
Worked example: 3/4 + 5/8
Enter 3÷4+5÷8 and press ENTER.
Mixed numbers
A TI-84 may display an improper fraction rather than a mixed number. Convert 11/8 manually: 11 ÷ 8 = 1 remainder 3, so the mixed number is 1 3/8.
Common mistakes
Missing parentheses
1+2÷3+4 is not the same as (1+2)÷(3+4).
Rounded decimal will not convert
Only values close enough to a rational fraction convert cleanly.
Negative fraction ambiguity
Use (-3)÷4 or -(3÷4).
Answer stays decimal
Run the conversion command after the calculation.
Practice
Calculate 2/3 + 1/6 and express the answer as a fraction.
Reveal the answer
4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6.
